Texas Electric Car Rebates and Incentives

This guide walks you through rebates and incentives offered to Texans for the purchase of an electric vehicle in the year 2020.

State Rebates

Light-Duty Alternative Fuel Vehicle Rebate (Up to $5,000)

If you live in Texas, you’re potentially eligible to receive up to $5,000 for the purchase or lease of a new clean air vehicle. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has created the The Light-Duty Motor Vehicle Purchase or Lease Incentive Program (LDPLIP), which is a way to reward people for purchasing or leasing clear air vehicles. They have a very simple process to apply for and receive the rebate. You’ll first purchase or lease the vehicle, submit the proper documents by mail, they’ll review them, and they’ll send you your money.

Eligible Vehicles

Those who purchase or lease a new light-duty motor vehicle powered by hydrogen fuel cell or other electric drive (plug-in or plug-in hybrid) may qualify for this rebate. See below for a list of the vehicle makes and models that qualify.

List of eligible vehicles

Eligibility Requirements:

In order to qualify for this incentive, you must purchase or lease your vehicle in Texas. Additionally, you must purchase or lease your vehicle on or after September 1, 2019, and before the application deadline of January 7, 2021. They also require you to commit to driving/operating the vehicle in Texas for 12 months.

If you purchase or lease a new light-duty motor vehicle powered by hydrogen fuel cell or other electric drive (such as plug-in, plug-in-hybrid) you can qualify for one of the following:

  • Purchase or Lease (three-year or longer lease term): $2,500
  • Lease (two-year to less than three-year term): $1,665
